| Restaurant review - Church & State |

Jake and I went to Church & State on Friday night for a post-holiday/his birthday dinner. Church & State is the French outpost of the gang that brought us Cobras & Matadors, Malo and 750 mL. Everyone knows how much I love those places and how much I love French food, so I figured this would be a treat. The restaurant is located on the bottom level of the Biscuit Company Lofts (the renovated Nabisco Factory), which I really like the look of but hate the theory of (gentrification, ugh).
I got there earlier than Jake. I wore my APC dress and, when Jake arrived, he looked like he could be an APC employee too. We fit in perfectly with the French decor. Speaking of the decor, it was a lot of art nouveau-esque posters advertising bitters and absinthe mixed with newer, modern American elements (like a large Obama piece). They had bottles of wine lined along one wall up against the exposed bricks and an exposed kitchen at the rear to boot. The place was lit via strings of exposed bulbs running from the pillars creating a nice subtle glow.
While I waited for Jake, I got a glass of wine at the bar, a beaujolais. Really good, simple and clean, you could really taste the newness. I also realized while waiting how attractive the majority of the waiters were. Too bad I was meeting a bow for dinner.... It was actually pretty empty, maybe three tables of couples and two men at the bar. I felt silly for making reservations at the time but by the time we left, the place was packed to the gills. Our waiter ended up being this really fun mustachioed dude who totally joked around with us about "ordering" (how rude is that phrase!), smoking weed and eating the grilled cheese, and how the chocolate tart dessert looked like an African-American PacMan. He really made the night.
Now to the important stuff: the food. TOO MUCH SALT! I could taste it for days after. It made the food delicious, but I felt like my mouth was all puckered the next day. I got the steak tartare (of course) and Jake just got a salad and french fries. Everything except for maybe the steak tartare was super salty (and maybe Jake's salad, but I didn't try it). The olives were salty, the french fires were ridiculously salty, the bread that came with my raw beef was salty. Due to this, I probably won't be choosing to go there again. If someone suggests, I'd glad go again because the ambiance is great and our waiter was really fun. Those two things really saved the night.
the conversation. Jake and I finally came to terms about being friends. We got in a few little tiffs throughout the dinner but I think they are just are normal little things. Jake is still convinced that I will marry him but he's ok with the fact that it won't be anytime soon and that I won't be dating him anytime soon either. He's happy to just be friends because ultimately we do get along really really great. He may be dating models but they don't have a sense of humor like me haha. And I'm really happy about that because I think Jake is one of the people that I'd really like to get dinner with once every week or so because he is interesting and intelligent and opens my eyes to things and enjoys a lot of the same stuff I do. And to solidify our bonds of friendship, we went dutch on dinner. |

it's funny how i find this song really annoying, but it's in a lot of things i like. like the strip club scene in 'lost in translation'. |
